Based in Papamoa, Bay of Plenty, Cycle Worx is a friendly local bike shop offering bicycle sales, custom builds, services and repairs, as well as a range of quality bike apparel and accessories.

Having just moved to a spacious new building in Papamoa, we sat down to chat with Brad Scott, Owner and Operator, to find out about the story of Cycle Worx so far.

 

The Inspiration

Brad’s passion for cycling runs deep. Originally from South Africa, his cycling journey started at a young age, racing at a provincial level through his childhood and teenage years.

“I started racing XC in 2004 and soon developed a passion for both racing and fixing bikes” Brad recalls.

After relocating to New Zealand, he quickly found himself immersed in the local riding scene and industry, building relationships and gaining the experience to shape his vision for something more.

And how he came to land on the name ‘Cycle Worx’?

“Honestly, it was the first thing that came to mind that sounded awesome - especially with the ‘x’ at the end!”

 

The Evolution

What started as a garage-based dream quickly gained momentum.

“After about eight weeks, I realised I needed a commercial space. We needed accounts to scale and operate properly” Brad explains.

That realisation led to the first official Cycle Worx store opening in Fashion Island, Papamoa, where they operated for three years in a compact space.

“Demand kept growing, [so] we looked for a bigger spot… and that’s how we ended up here at Ashley Place”.

The team has just moved into a spacious new store in Ashley Place, Papamoa: 160sqm of cycles, gear and a workshop three times the size of the old one. Plus the new space features a growing E-Bike rental fleet and an expanded retail range of bikes, clothing, parts and accessories.

What Sets Cycle Worx Apart From The Rest?

Brad is crystal clear on this: it’s all about customer experience and honesty.

“We make sure than when customers leave, they understand what’s been done to their bike, instead of just fixing their bike and sending them out the door”.

Cycle Worx strives to create an environment that’s welcoming and unintimidating, no matter the customer’s riding background or experience level. And when it comes to servicing, Brad wants his customers to be back on their wheels as fast as possible.

“We really push for express service. We try not to hold onto jobs for too long; short turnaround is what we aim for”.
